NUM calls Gold Fields strike

Production at all of Gold Fields' South African operations will come to a halt on Sunday if a strike by 52000 workers affiliated to the National Union of Mineworkers goes ahead.
The union has called the strike over the 'irregular' implementation of the flexible work capacity testing systems which allows mining companies to relieve medically unfit workers of their duties. But the union says Gold Field is using the systems to retrench workers, not as a safety tool.
NUM spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said, "close to 3000 workers have been 'fired' using the system. We are not opposed to the functional work capacity but certainly have a problem with the manner in which it is implemented."
